You have seen many of our machines but we rarely talk about what radio gear and FPV gear we recommend to people who are just starting out.
I think by now everyone already knows that if you want the best gear you would pick the FrSky Taranis and the FatShark Dominator Goggles. The biggest problem with that is the set up costs more then the quad package itself.
Now that this hobby has grown there has been a lot of competition and innovation that has been driving the entry level gear prices down and quality up. Now you no longer have to spend over $600 on the ground station side to get started.
It is no secret that there was always cheaper alternatives out there but the quality has never been up to RushMore Mods standards, until now.
Now, We are happy to recommend a package that only cost around $150 for the Radio Transmitter and FPV Goggles.
Lets start with the Radio Transmitter side first.
Radio and Receiver on Amazon
FlySky i6 Radio transmitter is an amazing radio that provides all the features that you will require to start your FPV adventures. It might not have all the crazy settings that the Taranis offers but lets face it you only need about 10% of them to fly miniquads.
FlySky i6 at $55 can not be beat in terms of cost to feature ratio. There has been many radios out there that are fairly cheap but only recently a sub $100 radio introduced a digital signal transmission protocol.
What does that mean for you?
For the longest time we were all using the PPM protocol which in itself made miniquads possible i think, since we no longer needed to have 8 cables going to the flight controller, we now only needed 1 servo cable. Meaning that all of the radio channels are being transmitted via one signal wire. FrSky Taranis has been the best in that.
The major problem with PPM signal is its latency, Even the FrSky Taranis and D4R-II receiver had a 27ms latency, which for the longest time was not really bothering people until FrSky came out with its SBUS digital protocol which dropped the latency to 8ms.
All of the sudden your machines become a lot more responsive, and much more pleasurable to fly, as soon as you give input the machine reacts.
This $55 FlySky i6 now also supports digital protocol in its own form, called IBUS, but the principal is the same. That is why in our book this is a must have radio for anyone starting out and do not want to pay the $250 for the Taranis.
One Important thing is to make sure that you purchase the radio with the correct receiver, as most of the packages on amazon come with an older style receiver that does not even support PPM let alone SBUS.
The FlySky IA6 receiver is what usually comes with the radio but you want the IA6B receiver, which will include all the latest and greatest features.
This is a 6 channel radio which is all you really need for mini-quads but if you want some of the new extra features that our machines have built in you would need a 7th channel to activate AirMode and Buzzer alarm in case you need to find your machine in the bushes ;)
This reason in particular is why have been holding out on writing this post. So now with ease you can upgrade your $55 radio to put out 10 channels, as some great developers put out an open source firmware to unlock a ton of features.
When you bring your radio to us at the time of picking up your machine we will upgrade the remote for you free of charge.
I am not going to go into reviewing this radio as there has been a lot of great minds who have done so already, just check on youtube.
Now on to the FPV Gear:
As all of you know FatShark goggles are extremely expensive, and believe its the main reason why people are so worried about getting into FPV.
Im going to put out $400 for the goggles and i dont even know if i am going to love this whole FPV thing?
This is what i hear from most beginners. Although i know that they/you will love FPV its still hard.
That all stops now.
Eachine VR007 FPV Goggles $70
or
Eachine EV800 FPV Goggles $99.99
Which ever one you choose is a great choice but in our opinion the extra $30 that you would have to pay for the EV800 is well worth it.
Eachine EV800 has hit the sweet spot in terms of balancing all the great features you need in an FPV goggles and keeping the size perfect, as well as adding some other really cool features.
This is by far the best entry level goggles you can possibly get in our opinion.
The screen resolution and brightness is perfect
Come with a Built-IN Battery
Chanel Display and AutoSearch Feature
Perfect Size
and probobly the coolest thing is that you can actually remove the monitor easily and use it as a monitor instead of goggles.
We actually tell our customers to purchase these and then get the Dominators, that way you have an extra set of goggles to show you wife or friends what FPV is all about ;)
Now that we have amazing feedback from over 20 of our last customers we are happy to say that these are an amazing goggles to start with.
This hobby is becoming more affordable then ever, at the same time it is very important to do your research as a lot of the time if its cheap its most likely garbage.
These two items are a rare exception!
